Body doubling

Working on your own task while someone else works on theirs. They do not help, supervise, or even speak. Their presence is the entire intervention, and for a lot of people it is the difference between starting and not starting.

What body doubling actually is

The term comes from ADHD coaching, where it describes bringing another person into the room while you do a task you have been avoiding. The double is not a tutor and not a manager. They are frequently doing something completely unrelated.

What changes is the cost of quitting. Alone, abandoning a task costs nothing and no one records it. With someone else present, stopping becomes a visible act, and that small amount of friction is usually enough to keep the session going.

It is the same reason a library works better than a desk at home, and the reason people who cannot run alone can run with a club.

Why it works, specifically for ADHD

ADHD tasks do not usually fail from lack of stamina. They fail at initiation — the gap between deciding to start and actually starting, which can stretch for hours over a task that takes twenty minutes.

Body doubling attacks exactly that gap. A session with another person has a start time that is not yours to negotiate. You are not deciding whether to begin; the session begins and you are in it.

Body doubling is widely reported as useful by adults with ADHD and is a standard suggestion in ADHD coaching practice. It is a strategy people find works rather than a clinically validated treatment, and it is not a substitute for one.

How to run a session

1

Pick the task before the session starts

Decide what you are working on in advance. Choosing the task after the timer starts is where most sessions are lost.

2

Set a bounded interval

25 or 50 minutes. The end time is doing as much work as the other person is — an open-ended session has no deadline to push against.

3

Start together, stay silent

Begin at the same time. Do not narrate, check in, or chat. Silence is the format working, not a sign that it is going badly.

4

Stop when the timer stops

Finish at the interval's end even if you are mid-flow. This keeps the format repeatable, which matters more than any single long session.

Body doubling in Peazehub

Peazehub does it through study groups: a small set of people with a shared hours goal, where every completed session moves the same bar. There is no scheduling and no video call to join.

That makes it asynchronous body doubling. You do not need to be online at the same time as anyone else — the presence comes from the record rather than from a live feed. For people who find video calls their own kind of distraction, this is usually the easier version.

If you want the live version, the format is the same: agree an interval, start together, stay silent. The ADHD timer defaults to 10-minute sprints for the same initiation reason.

Common questions

What is body doubling?

Body doubling is working on your own task in the presence of another person who is also working. The other person does not help with the task or supervise it; their presence alone is what makes starting and continuing easier.

Does body doubling work for ADHD?

It is one of the most commonly reported non-medication strategies among adults with ADHD. The mechanism is task initiation: an external presence reduces the pull toward distraction at the moment work is supposed to start, which is the point where ADHD tasks most often fail.

Does body doubling work over video, or does it need to be in person?

Video works, and so does a shared room with no video at all. What matters is that the session is bounded in time and that someone else is present in it. Many people find silent, camera-off sessions work as well as video calls.

Do I need to talk to my body double?

No. Most body doubling is silent. Talking usually turns the session into a conversation, which defeats the purpose.

How long should a body doubling session be?

Match it to a normal focus interval — 25 or 50 minutes is typical. The session needs a defined end, because an open-ended one removes the deadline that makes the format work.
